India: General

The Henna tattoo has undergone a revival in recent years with the explosion of culture influencing from India to Asia. Once found only in certain cultures, Henna has become very popular with individuals wishing to use a more natural form of tattoo that is not permanent.

The Henna tattoo art is one of complex lines and symbols that are traditionally associated with Indian weddings in the Far East but have roots that go back much farther. Some historians attribute the first henna tattoo to literature detailing the battle between Baal and Anath as far back as the Bronze Age.

One of the benefits of Henna is that it is a natural product. As such there is a great leeway for experimentation in design. Traditional designs do not have to be used and there are many kits available that include design patterns. The henna tattoo removal is simply the skin replenishing the cells and forcing the dye out of the body. There are tattoo studios that do offer permanent designs that resemble the henna tattoo. These tattoos are put into place with the typical tattoo machines but use a red dye that will remain permanent.

A note of caution concerning henna is the use of a product labeled as “black henna” or an indigo. Natural henna does not come in dark shades. The dark colors are actually made by combining henna with a chemical. There can be very harsh side effects such as skin blistering. As with any product, even a natural one such as henna, there can be allergic reactions. This is particularly true if the individual has a rare genetic condition called a G6PD deficiency. In large doses the dye molecule in henna can be fatal. If it is unknown whether or not henna will cause an allergic reaction it is best to do a small skin test.

A henna tattoo can be incredibly beautiful if applied properly. Much like the mainstream tattooist, a henna artist must pay attention to each stroke to ensure its proper place. The upside is that it will wear off. The downside is that it will wear off as well no matter how much the person loves the design. With proper care the henna artwork can last for weeks and can always be reapplied.

It is shocking to think that the terrible disaster in Mumbai, India could have been avoided. According to reports, the plans to attack Mumbai were found at least two months before they happened. The American intelligence bureau, FBI, reported that Mumbai and Bombay were under threat of terrorist attacks. The US intellegence service had even supplied destinations as to where they may attack including the Taj Hotel.
The revelation that was reported by ABC News follows other claims that warnings went un-noticed or were not properly acted upon. Indian intelligence officials have said that a phone call to a number in Pakistan belonging to Lashar-e-Taiba, the group that is believed to of carried out the attacks. The satellite phone call also indicated that there will be sea bourne attacks on the city.
The Chairman of the Taj Hotel admitted that security was heightened slightly following the initial warning then relaxed. The report does not actually indicate why the hotel management thought it would be acceptable to relax once they had received the report, perhaps they thought that it was a false alarm?
FBI, Scotland Yard and Israeli intelligence arrived in Bombay late on Sunday night and quickly got to examine the sites that were reported to apparently be attacked by terroists. Agents working with Indian intelligence had been analysing SIM cards from mobile phones and had apparently recovered a "treasure trove" of information about the attacks.
US Officials had also indicated that the SIM cards could of been taken within the US. Once the agents actually have the phone number they can analyse who was called and hopefully uncover everyone that was involved. Yet the FBI's investigation was slightly stalled in Mumbair as they were detained at the border. Their forensic equipment was analysed closely because the US officials had not provided an inventory in advance according to reports by Indian officials.
It does seem to appear that these horrible attacks were anticipated which is desperately unfortunate. So, it goes to show that nothing of this magnitude cannot be ignored at any cost, especially when people’s lives are at stake.

An election day is the most important day in the life of a democratic nation. It usually comes once in five years. People get an opportunity to elect new representatives if they are not satisfied with the performance of the sitting candidates.

I had the good luck to witness India’s ninth general elections. Our area had to elect one representative for the Lok Sabha and one for the state assembly. But there were in all seven candidates in the fray for one Lok Sabha seat and ten for the lone assembly seat.

Distribution of leaflets, appeal from blaring loudspeakers on the moving cars and jeeps, posters and banners, processions and meetings were the usual modes of canvassing. In the last few days there was door-to-door canvassing also. Representatives went from door to door and solicited votes* Sometimes, there were clashes between the supporters of rival candidates and the police had to intervene to restore peace.

The canvassing stopped 48 hours before the election day. Peace was restored. At last the much awaited election day dawned. Voting started at eight in the morning. There were long queues of voters at all polling booths. Voters went in the booth by turn. Each had his name in the electoral roll ticked. His left-hand finger was marked with indelible ink and he was given the two ballot-papers-one for the Lok Sabha seat and the other for the assembly seat. Names of all the candidates along with their election symbols were printed on the ballot papers. The voter went to a secluded corner, stamped the symbol of the candidate of his choice, folded the ballot-paper and dropped it in the sealed ballot box. There were two boxes - one for the Lok Sabha seat and the other for the assembly seat. Voting slowed down after eleven, but picked up speed after four. As the closing time neared, people rushed to the polling booths to exercise their voting rights. There were all types of voters-men and women, young and old, the disabled and the sick. An old man was brought on a stretcher to enable him to caste his vote. India is proud of such politically conscious voters who help to keep the democracy alive.

Polling stopped sharp at the stroke of six. An exciting day was over at last. Now began the guess and expectations and waiting for the results.
